Understanding Nutrition Labels Without Overcomplicating It

Joanna Perl, The Farm's Registered Dietitian

• May 28, 2026

Nutrition labels can feel overwhelming at first glance, but understanding a few basics can give you a much clearer picture of what you’re putting into your body and how foods fit into your overall nutrition. They can help you better understand where your calories are coming from and make more informed choices instead of relying solely on packaging and marketing claims.

Start With the Serving Size

One of the biggest things to pay attention to is the serving size. A package may look like a single serving but actually contain two or three. That means the calories and nutrients listed may need to be multiplied based on how much you actually eat. Understanding portion sizes is one of the best ways to more accurately understand what you’re taking in.

Look Beyond Calories

Calories are often the first thing people notice on a label, but they only tell part of the story. Looking at the overall nutritional breakdown can help provide a more balanced understanding of a food and how it may fit into your day. Nutrition labels can also be especially helpful for identifying things many people tend to consume in excess, including sodium, added sugars, and saturated fat. At the same time, they can highlight nutrients many people often do not get enough of, especially fiber.

Marketing Can Be Misleading

Words like “natural,” “multigrain,” or “low fat” can make a product sound healthier than it actually is. That doesn’t necessarily mean the food is unhealthy, but it does mean the front of the package does not always tell the full story. The nutrition label and ingredient list usually provide a much clearer understanding of what a product actually contains. In many cases, learning how to read them can also help you avoid spending more money on products that are marketed well but are not significantly different nutritionally from less expensive options.

Nutrition Labels Are a Tool, Not a Rulebook

Nutrition labels can be incredibly helpful, but they are only one part of how we make food choices. Things like cost, convenience, availability, taste preferences, lifestyle, and individual health needs all matter too. A food does not have to be “perfect” on paper to still be a good fit for you. The goal of understanding nutrition labels is not to overanalyze every food choice. It’s simply to give you more confidence and awareness when deciding what works best for your body and your life.
